Avian Wellness Retreat
I’m very excited to be attending an event put on by Phoenix Landing, called the Avian Wellness Retreat, happening later this year.
OCTOBER 20-21, 2012
8:30-5:00 on Saturday; 9:00-5:00 on Sunday
A Weekend of Knowledge and Hands-On Training
An amazing combination of teachers will join us for an exceptional event in one of the most beautiful fall locations in the country.
This retreat is an opportunity to learn about many aspects of avian health, from basic topics like feather health and nutrition, to the more complex issues like sensory perception and how the parrot brain functions.
In addition, there will be side labs where you can acquire some hands-on training for things like how to medicate or towel your bird, how to make nutritious foods, or create some extraordinary enrichment items. The entire conference earns 14 Continuing Education Credits (CEUs) for IAABC members.
Understanding avian medicine makes it easier to work with our veterinarians to protect the well-being of our birds. This gives our parrots the opportunity to live the long, healthy lives that they deserve.
The Wellness Retreat will focus on assisting companion parrot owners with the tools they need to understand avian medicine and care for their birds.
Keynote Presenter throughout the Weekend: Susan Orosz, DVM has many amazing degrees and certifications (PhD, DVM, Dipl ABVP (Avian), and Dipl ECZM (Avian)). She is board certified in the U.S. and in Europe, and has worked exclusively with birds and exotics for over 26 years. Dr. Orosz also taught vet students and residents at The University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine for 18 years. She currently owns an exotics practice in Toledo, Ohio.
However, what is really special about “Dr. O” is her ability to share valuable health and medical information with companion parrot owners in a way that we can put it to use for the benefit of our birds. She is a wealth of experience and knowledge in regards to avian health and well-being, and we consider her one of the most exceptional avian veterinarians of our time. This will be a unique opportunity to spend two full days with her, just imagine the learning possibilities!
Frank Rutowski, DVM is the owner of the Animal Care Hospital of Matthews, near Charlotte, NC. He has been a treasure to Phoenix Landing – as a teacher, veterinarian for some of our birds, eco-tourism guide, and as an all around helpful advisor. We greatly appreciate his teaching style, he makes learning fun and easy to understand for all. Dr. Rutowski has recently incorporated laser therapy into his practice, which he is using successfully to restore health and quality-of-life to birds with serious problems like hypersensitivity syndrome. This is just one of many topics that he will address at the Wellness Retreat.
Pamela Clark, CVT is a well-known author, speaker, and parrot behavior consultant whose experience with parrots dates back 40 years. If you have ever read her articles or heard her speak, then you know that Pam’s insights into the nature of parrots is extraordinary. She has an intuitive understanding of their needs, which she combines with her years of experience as a vet tech, behavior consultant, teacher and exceptional ability to communicate.
Pam’s knowledge extends to a wide range of parrot species and she also trains parrots in behaviors as complex as free flight outdoors. Her particular areas of special interest include feather destructive behavior, training, flight and nutrition.
Jenny Drummey is the author of several books including Project Parrot: A Behavior Guidebook for You and Your Parrot and Biting Matters. She is also a teacher and an adoption coordinator for Phoenix Landing. Jenny has a unique way of communicating and knows how to frame issues and concepts in a way that is fun, relevant to our lives, and easy to understand. Her efforts have made a big difference to the lives of many parrots and their people.
Kris Porter is an enrichment genius. She is clever and creative, and knows how to think like a parrot! If you haven’t visited her web site at parrotenrichment.com, we highly recommend it. She is also the author of the Parrot Enrichment Activity Book, a hugely helpful resource chocked full of ideas. However, nothing is as useful as making things first-hand, so Kris will conduct a hands-on lab where we will make a variety of enrichment items that you can take home to your birds as souvenirs from your retreat experience!
